Everyone I met in Budapest told me to go to Aurora, a concert venue and alternative community space. Aurora has a basement concert venue that was hosting a heavy metal band the night I came. There is a garden for day drinking and the entire building is plastered with promotions for political and arts events.
Although the space is very much a venue, they host occasional lectures and conferences and appear to serve as the primary hub for alternative community in Budapest. There are rooms on the second floor that can be used for occasional language classes.
There is a clear separation between those who work in the space and visitors so I am a bit put off by the space but it still serves as a community space for alternative and political culture.
What we learned
- Performance venues can be used as hubs of external political organizing.
